It’s January 16, and our Christmas tree is still casting its warm glow across our living room. The reluctance to take it down isn’t just a matter of logistics; it’s a testament to the magnificence of the tree itself. In the 23 years we’ve called this 80-year-old cottage home, this tree stands out as the most splendid we’ve ever had. Within the confines of our tiny abode (680 square feet), the open beam living room ceiling reaches a peak of 14 feet. The mystery of how we managed to fit it through the door remains, but there it stands, reaching within a foot of the ceiling and spreading its branches almost to the walls, claiming half of our living space.
Remarkably, it has retained its vibrant green freshness longer than any tree in our memory. Acquired three weeks before Christmas, it continues to imbibe water, a longevity owed, perhaps, to the occasional shot of vodka added to its water, a quirky tip from the tree lot attendants.
In a recent letter shared with friends, Marti eloquently encapsulated the sentiments evoked by our tree, sharing that it feels like a beacon of warmth and love, eagerly expecting more joyous moments of our family discovering further gifts tucked happily beneath its branches.
To truly nourish our spirits, we need to hold onto the following truth: The essence of living lies in giving. Regardless of how occupied or financially strained you or I may feel, there’s always something we can offer to others. Many miss the chance to realize that their existence makes a difference, but it undeniably does. Our life holds significance, and aligning ourselves with the truth that our purpose extends beyond acquiring to giving, allows others to sense our authenticity, encouraging them to open up to us.
As we give back to those around us, it serves as a reminder of our true calling. Directing our focus towards the needs of others has a unique way of propelling us to surpass our perceived limitations. We find strength even in moments of exhaustion. When we contribute, we become integral parts of something grander than ourselves.
So, I ask you, what lies beneath your branches? What treasures do you offer to those around you now that Christmas is over and a New Year has begun? In the spirit of our magnificent Christmas tree, may your life be a beacon of warmth and love, eagerly expecting the joyous moments that unfold beneath the branches of your existence.

It is a beautiful tree and thanks for sharing about the tree. I still have my Christmas Cards up. We still have our lights up outside. I thank you for your prayers. I saw my mental health doctor yesterday and in a few days call some numbers about also getting grief counseling. I am on some more anti depressant medication and my husband has control of it. I almost grabbed a bottle yesterday before the appointment to to take what was left in the bottle of one of them. I hadn’t gotten the second one yet. Today always praying and talking to family and friends. I always feel better after one of your messages. Take care, God Bless, and thank you for everything. I wrote a check to the Catch back in late October the Number was 239 state of Nevada. Still hasn’t cleared. I sent to the only address I know and have sent gift cards to the Catch at the same address over some years. Hopefully it will turn up soon. I deducted it long ago. Have a great week.
