The Jesus Movement was never over

Jesus is still the message; Grace is still the means; and Grace Turned Outward is still the ministry to the world. Drop everything else and pick this up. This is what it is all about.

Contrary to popular opinion, and even what I’ve written in the past, I am happy to report that the Jesus Movement was never over. Yes, I’ve talked about the Jesus Movement being over at a certain time and place, and I’ve talked about the Christian subculture that replaced it — and I’m not taking any of that back, because it is all true in terms of a broad historical brush — but in terms of the thin line of truth still running through all things — in terms of the light still shining, steady and strong, and the message still being proclaimed, it’s been continuing right along just fine. Because I can tell you where the Jesus Movement was never over, and never will be, and that would be in my heart. And if in yours, too, then all the stronger.

We’re like Elijah, who, when confronted by his enemies, ran off to hide in the desert and cried out to God, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” Ever felt like that? To which God replied, “Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel — all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him” (1 Kings 19:15-18). Surprise, Elijah; you’re not the only one. Nor are we.

So when we, say that the Millennials and Gen Z are singing the same tune, we’re also saying they are picking up the torch and running with it. And while they are pioneers with their own frontier, and their own future in their hands, we recognize the flame. We will gladly come alongside, and when they invite us, we will partner with them. We will gather around the same flame (how we rejoice to see it burning!). The Jesus Movement is alive and well! The Jesus Movement never died. Jesus is still moving.

These are not just semantics. I am not just moving some words around. This is prophetic truth. This is what it is to feel the wind of the Spirt blowing across your face and though you don’t know where it came from or where it is going, you recognize its scent, and in time, the fog clears just enough for you get a glimpse of the whole picture. This is one of those times. I am also not the only one seeing this, which is proof that I’m not some wacko gone off the deep end.

We are at an important juncture in history. A spiritual revolution is re-surfacing. Get ready!

1 Response to The Jesus Movement was never over

  1. I may be straying too far from literal accuracy but when God said, “…I reserve seven thousand in Israel,” He didn’t necessarily specify that all those souls were of Hebrew birth, nor did He mention the probable proposition that there were several others outside of Israel’s borders “whose knees have not bowed down to Baal.”

The way things seem to be going off the rails these days, it’s easy enough to despair and feel as if we’re the only one (or ones) who are left to struggle in the continual onslaughts of global upheaval, national implosion, cultural warfare, generational differences, and idolatry.

It would be too easy to cast a wary eye at all of society and just lock ourselves away to the confines of comfortable pleasant memories for ourselves and condemnation for all others not thinking, feeling, believing, or preaching as we do (or once did).

And we certainly are free to stop engaging even though there’s more for us to do. However, should we choose to opt out then we must also know for certain that God still has millions of those others who, as Jesus said, “If they are not against you then they are for you.” (Luke 9:50)

They may not walk, talk, look, behave, match our age, or even believe as we would prefer but they have not bent their knees or kissed the rings of the false gods who dominate headlines and demand mindless allegiance.

When faced with the refreshing truth, Elijah got over his short sightedness, self doubts, and fear, then came to his senses and continued to press on in the strength of the Lord knowing he wasn’t alone… spiritually or physically.

We are equally at liberty to keep pressing on.

    Be encouraged and encouraging!

    Shalom, Peace …

    🙂
