We’ll stand by you

Oh, why you look so sad?edgar+family
Tears are in your eyes
Come on and come to me now
Don’t be ashamed to cry
Let me see you through
‘Cause I’ve seen the dark side too
When the night falls on you
You don’t know what to do
Nothing you confess
Could make me love you less

I’ll stand by you
I’ll stand by you
Won’t let nobody hurt you
I’ll stand by you
by Billy Steinberg, Thomas Kelly, Chrissie Hynde

This week on America’s Got Talent, a redemptive story was told in 90 seconds — a story that took years to unfold and lots of hurt and pain to reveal, and yet in a 90-second performance, there might have been enough grace to make it all worth while.

That darn Thing One Syndrome is back!

th-51

I call it the Thing One Syndrome. It’s that one thing in your life that if you could fix it, you would have most, if not all, of your problems solved. It can be anything – a bad habit, a disability, a secret sin, a mental disorder – but the one requirement is that it bears the weight of everything else in your life that is not right. What it turns out to be is one big excuse. Believe me, I know that of which I speak. I could tell you what my Thing 1 is but, it doesn’t matter. The important thing is for you to think about yours and not turn it into a convenient scapegoat.

Get out and vote (but don’t forget who you are)

th-50

Well it’s primary election time here in California and I don’t think I can remember a stranger election than this one. Most people are looking at the candidates for President and thinking, “This is it? This is the best our political system could come up with?” The media have even come up with a new category of voter, the NA’s, or “None of the Above.”

Without tipping the scale in any direction, I think it is safe to say that both Mr. Sanders and Mr. Trump owe their success to a widespread fear and discontent with politics and politicians in general. Everyone seems to want an outsider in the White House, even when history and common sense would indicate that an “outsider” is only an “outsider” as long as he/she is “outside.” The minute one gets elected, one is on the inside, and here we go again.

What I learned at the DMV

th-49

Chandler, our 16-year-old son, recently got his learner’s driving permit. To do so he had to pass a written test of 46 multiple choice questions. We were concerned about the test because Chandler has challenges reading due to a learning disability he has struggled with all his life. I had heard there was an audio version of the test so I inquired about that at the DMV, and sure enough, there was. However, when we checked in for his appointment, we found out they were not prepared that day for the audio test, so Chandler got the next best thing, which turned out to be the absolute best for him; he got the test delivered to him one-on-one by one of the trainers.

Writing on the wall

IMG_1169Marti has been frantically trying to get Chandler’s room ready for his homecoming, which was yesterday. Part of that was to have his room painted to his specifications. This is the first time Chandler has had his own room he could paint and arrange as he pleases and he definitely didn’t disappoint. Chandler is a young man who is very clear about what he wants, and he wanted three of his walls to be black and one blue — and a rather dark blue at that.

It sounds depressing at first until you realize the black is a chalkboard black which will enable him to write on his walls with chalk and erase and change at will. The first thing he has going up are the sayings from the book of Proverbs he found and taped to his wall back in Wyoming. Now he can just write them on his wall. Now he can plan, record names and phone numbers, have his friends leave messages, do art with colored chalk — any number of things are now possible in his room. Heck, I want to borrow it for a brainstorming session; it would be perfect for that. A few  coats of this stuff on his wall, and his room becomes a one-room blackboard.

I’ve noticed lots of Chandler’s ideas are like this. They first seem weird and off-beat, but suddenly you get what he was thinking and you realize how brilliant of an idea it was.

Maybe there’s something for us all here, at least, symbolically. God wants us to surround ourselves with His word. We are constantly being bombarded with messages and philosophies from our culture, many of which are not true or not helpful to our growth. We need the word of God to stay on track with the truth. David said he hid God’s word in his heart so that he wouldn’t sin against the Lord. He knew it would take that.

The children of Israel were told to write the words of God on their doorposts and the gates of their houses. In other words, surround yourself with the word because otherwise, you will forget.

We are forgetful people. We need reminders. Plus, the word of God allows us to go on the offensive in our lives and not be defensive all the time. We need not be defined by our weaknesses, but let our weaknesses lead us to our strength in Christ. We can be made sure of His presence and His provision for us. Wherever we can put this — whatever we write it on … our walls, our hearts, our gates… we need it. We need the word of God, today … every day.

One for all

th-46

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:1-2)

Jesus is  the One. He’s the One for you, and the One for me, and the One for the whole world. If there was ever one for all — every last one — it is Jesus. Jesus is One for all.

Anyone who says, “Well, your belief in Jesus might be good for you, but it’s just not for me,” is sadly blinded and does not know the truth. Jesus is One for all, not just those who believe it, but for everyone. He was the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. There is no sin outside the atoning sacrifice of Jesus’ death on the cross. There simply and clearly is no sin that Jesus hasn’t paid for. That person at work making life miserable for you has already been forgiven. Jesus is for her. You can be, too. Terrorist killing in the name of Allah have already been forgiven; their sins have been paid for. Jesus is for them. You can be, too. The very ones who crucified Jesus were forgiven; He forgave them from the cross even as He was dying.

th-45

Well Chandler and I hit the ultimate driving experience last night. After coming upon Lake Roosevelt east of Phoenix, and taking an evening sunset swim (Chandler talked me into it, but then, being the first in, I had to talk him into the water!), we decided to stick with our plan for following the road less traveled, which turned out to be the Apache Trail, a 31-mile stretch of Arizona state highway 88 literally cut into the side of a mountain and a dirt road the whole way with numerous one-lane bridges. It took us over two hours to go 31 miles. Yes, that’s an average of 15 miles an hour. Of course there was no indication of this on the map and no sign at the beginning for how long this was going to be — just a sign that read “Pavement Ends.” Yes, it certainly did. Talk about the road less traveled … we met one car in two hours, and that was during the last half mile. We knew that because we stopped him and asked him how much farther we had to go.

Sign up today, while it’s still May!

th-44

Well it’s hard to believe it’s the end of May already and time to wrap up our “All for one and one for all” membership campaign. We have over 20 new MemberPartners and a few more who will be reporting in today! There’s still time!

One of the most exciting new developments in our campaign have been those MemberPartners who have decided to sponsor someone else who wants to get involved but doesn’t have the financial resources to do so at this time. Both David, from Texas, and Priscilla, from New York have committed to sponsoring a mom for 6 months as a beautiful Mother’s Day gift.

Another sponsor, John, from Chicago, has shared his story with me, and I must pass it on to you since I found it so inspiring and something we can all learn from. John is not new to the Catch. He has been supporting this ministry periodically over the last few years, and has now decided to come on as a MemberPartner and sponsor his daughter as well. But I’ll let him tell that story, since he tells it so well.

The valley of the flags

th-42

Ever since our Route 66 experience a couple years ago, Chandler and I have been fond of seeing America from the vantage point of the winding narrow state highway versus the straight, wide Interstate. Like the Disney movie, “Cars,” we prefer to roll through the little towns rather than whizz past and never even know they were there. The one-lane roads — often without shoulders — disappear into the landscape much more easily than four lanes of divided highway that level hills, raise dips and create a sense of monotony where the most exciting thing is navigating through the big trucks. The state highway presents a view of America many don’t see anymore.

These boots are made for walkin’

IMG_1085

My birthday was the day after Chandler and I arrived in Wyoming. Though we will celebrate as a family later, I celebrated by buying myself something I’ve been thinking about ever since we’ve been coming here to be with Chandler during his treatment. I got myself a pair of black cowboy boots.

Some of you will remember the Catch I wrote during our first visit about the boots I borrowed from Chandler to go riding with him that were three sizes too large for me. Each visit I’ve thought about going home with my own pair, and suddenly it seemed the right time. Besides, I wanted something to remember these trips by. Though Chandler’s memories of this place will no doubt improve over time, right now, he’s only thinking about getting out of here. Me — I’ve come to like Laramie and Wyoming in general.
