Where are your huddled masses now?

th-31

One love, one blood, one life, you got to do what you should
One life with each other: sisters, brothers
One life, but we’re not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other
One, one         – Bono

It is indeed a scary time in America and the world, by association. It used to be America set the tone for human rights as a symbol of unity amidst diversity. The mere idea of the United States says it all. We are made up of immigrants all seeking hope and opportunity. America has never been one ethnic group; it is a melting pot made up of multi-cultures and multi-colors. We are many and we are one. The Latin phrase on the Seal of the United States of America is “E pluribus unum” — “Out of many, one.” It’s not just one of the many things about this country; it’s the whole point.

Who’s in charge of your life?

th-30

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes. Romans 1:16

Since time began, human beings have been fascinated with power. What makes some people stronger than others? And what is strength? Is it muscular, physical strength, or inner fortitude that makes one truly strong? In countless stories, legends and myths we have strength represented through gods and goddesses, later secularized into super human beings who have received special powers from sources beyond our earthly realm. Marvel comic books set the stage with Superman, Batman and others, and now through the magic of special effects, film has brought these comic book characters to “life.” We’ve even got our super powers fighting each other now. Any way we can play it, these movies are the popular blockbuster variety that seem to always guarantee large crowds at the theater.

Do you wanna be a Super?

th-29

What if I told you there was a way you could be strong enough and powerful enough to meet any challenge, accomplish any goal, and rise to any occasion God presented you with, without shrinking back? Would you want to know about it? If there was a way to be well, would you choose it? It’s the age-old question — the same one Jesus posed to the man who had been crippled for 37 years as he sat by the pool of Siloam: “Do you want to get well?”

How do you know if you’re in the right place?

th-1-1

Looking for a reason
Roaming through the night to find
My place in this world
My place in this world
Michael W. Smith

How my laptop became a laptop

th-26

Ever since my operation, I’ve been using my laptop on my lap. It sounds redundant but it’s not, because most people use their laptop computers on a table or a desk. I did. I was either in my office working at a desk or at the dining room table — my wife’s least favorite place for me to work, because it’s a dining room, for heaven’s sake, not an office. She’s a stickler for things being what they were meant to be.

One

th-25

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:4-6

Isn’t it amazing that there is just One? With all the churches, all the denominations, all the different ways of doing things, all the different languages and customs and cultures, there is still only One?

The universal benefit of needing someone

th-24

The Catch is a community, and in that sense, it is like the body of Christ, because the body of Christ is a community too. A community is a group of people sharing something in common and interdependent on one another. As a community, we have come to need each other.

So much more than the Catch

th-23

The Catch is so much more than the Catch, and as we prepare for our May MemberPartnership campaign, its only fitting to briefly review what some of those things are that make us more.

All for one and One for all!

th-22

Though it showed up a couple hundred years earlier during the religious persecutions of seventeenth-century Europe, “All for one and one for all” had its modern origin in the nineteenth-century novel The Three Musketeers by French author Alexandre Dumas. “Un pour tous, tous pour un.” In either case, it was a motto that captured unity and camaraderie in the face of opposition.

Finding the pathway to strength

th-21

In one of our family therapy sessions with Chandler, the therapist came up with the perfect picture for each one of us. She had me isolated and alone in a corner, Chandler standing up on a desk calmly telling everybody the way it is, and Marti jumping up and down on the couch waving her arms and trying to get everyone’s attention. It was so humorously and painfully true.
