What Jesus wants from us

th-20It’s been truly telling to watch this discussion develop over what makes a vital Christian today. Going back to the first century is one way to think about a Christianity that had no reputation to follow — no preconceived notions to confuse the understanding. Identifying true Christianity has been a difficult task of late due to a popularizing and politicizing of Christians and the Christian message over the last few decades. Anything to help sharpen the focus and get to the essence of what a real 21st century Christian looks like.

th-19

These last two Catches have inspired some of you to think about being first century Christians. It’s really all about living fresh every day with your faith. But it’s important for you to realize this is not hard. It’s not about going back to school and learning how to say everything in a new and different way. And if I gave that impression, I was wrong.

What makes Christians first century is pretty much wrapped up in one word: experience.

th-18

I can’t get this out of my head. I love this first century Christian thinking (see yesterday’s Catch) because it solves so many problems, and it ignites so many new fires. It’s almost like getting a new lease on life. So I’ve come up with some more advantages to thinking like a first century Christian. And I’m sure you can come up with some yourself. If you do, write us and let us know.  I think we could be onto something here.

First century Christians in 2016

th-17

What would it be like to be first century Christians as if there were no early church, no Vatican, no Holy Wars, no Crusades, no Reformation, no revival meetings, no Sunday School, no denominations, no Christian subculture, no culture wars and no worship wars? What if there were just us, today, in the here-and-now, figuring out what it means to walk in the Spirit?

Hazel’s last entry

Well we’ve done a wedding online for someone in our community. I suppose we could do a funeral. Although this will be a most unusual funeral — a funeral with the deceased present, sitting up, alert, and very much alive. It’s really not such a bad way to do it when you think that most people miss their own funeral. That’s unfortunate, because that’s when we say all manner of nice things about a person. They could have surely benefitted from that earlier.

What to do with failure? Hide it? No, unless you like being alone to yourself.

“So how are you?” someone inquires and you say, “I am fine. I am all right. I absolutely couldn’t be better.” And if pressed to continue, you will find past successes to tell about. But you will still be isolated in your failure, condemning feelings and the agonizing thoughts of regret. These thoughts and feelings work overtime in your mind causing you to be intimidated by your very own shadow, not to mention by the people you regard and respect.

How to know if you love like God

th-14“God so loved the world that He gave…” (John 3:16).

If you love like God, you will love and hurt at the same time.

The tragedy of God’s love is that it is not universally received. “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him” (John 1:11).  What a tragedy. Do you think God feels that tragedy? Personally, I think that is why the prophet Isaiah called Him a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.  That is why Jesus wept over Jerusalem, because He wanted to gather everyone up and bring them to Himself, but they would not all come.

No small miracles

"Oh no, my lord. It was borrowed."

“Oh no, my lord! It was borrowed!”

The Bible, both Old and New Testaments, is full of miracles. They happen for various reasons, but always they are a sign of God’s intervention in human affairs, and they always bring glory to God, because they are supernatural occurrences that defy human explanation. The sun gets extra time in the sky, the dead are raised, the blind see, Jesus walks on water, manna falls from heaven, and an iron axe head floats.

Wait a minute. What was that last one?

A word about our awesome prayer ministry

IMG_1026We have 12 prayer warriors who pray around the clock. They pray generally for all of you, and specifically for those who send in requests. And here’s the catch, we don’t know where they came from. And that’s the way it’s supposed to be. From the first one to the twelfth one, they showed up, unannounced. We did not solicit prayer warriors. We did not train them. No one wrote us: “I want to be a prayer warrior for the Catch, what do I have to do?” They came, fully prepared by the Holy Spirit to pray, and they announced that God had led them to us. Let me make this very clear: We do not have a prayer ministry today because we decided to have one. We have a prayer ministry today because of God and these twelve people.

When God gives you something special from His word

images-1If you read yesterday’s Catch, you were introduced to a concept in studying the Bible that should be common to us all as a means by which the word of God becomes real to us. I’m speaking of when you are reading or studying your Bible and you come upon a verse or passage that seems to say something different than what you’ve always heard preached in church or even how certain scriptures are used in regular conversations among Christians.
