The gospel according to you

th-15The Gospel According to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They are the four different accounts of the life of Jesus. Why do we have four accounts and not just one, especially when they sometimes don’t agree? Actually, this is something that confirms the authenticity of these texts rather than challenges it. Why didn’t they amalgamate them all into one document when the early church fathers put the books together to form the Bible we have today? Because they believed each one of them was inspired by God and therefore important in its own right. If four people witnessed the same event, each one would tell about it differently because they each witnessed it from a different perspective. At the same time, where they most agree will show the most important facts about what actually happened. You would expect them each to tell the same story with a different emphasis, which is exactly what we have. Continue reading

The artist

th-6You’ve heard the story of the young kindergartener who, when asked by her teacher what she was going to create for her art project, proudly announced she was going to draw a picture of God. To which the teacher announced, “But no one knows what God looks like.”

“They will in a minute,” came the bold reply. Continue reading

It’s all about connecting

thOkay my friends. One more post and we’ll put this “fun” thing to rest, at least for now. I didn’t realize it was going unearth so much from everyone. I didn’t realize I would be grappling like this. Now maybe I can start getting the Catch out on time again!

I said it in yesterday’s Catch, but I wanted to pull it out and say it a little louder.

It’s all about connecting. Continue reading

No swimming

th-18There’s been a lot of dialogue surrounding fun — particularly in light of my struggle to understand why and how fun eludes me as it does.

Those of us who have difficulty with the request to “have fun” can feel like our minds have completely rebelled against fun. The idea of having fun or the lack thereof can even make some of us anxious. Continue reading

More fun

th-15
Wow. I struck a cord a couple days ago talking about fun. So many great comments tell me we all want to have fun but we’re not all sure we can. Whether we’re feeling guilty, or feeling judged, or just not feeling free, there are so many barriers to having fun, it’s going to take a few of us together to knock them down. Continue reading

Starting checklist for grace turned outward

ChecklistIn a world of totally right and totally wrong—entirely good and entirely evil—we seek bridges from people in the church to people in the marketplace. In a world of blind passions and willful ignorance, we represent a message of acceptance and love. Continue reading

It’s Monday … Already!

Dave's dog (see Postscript)

Dave’s dog (see Postscript)

We have a piece we regularly publish on Fridays called “It’s Friday … Already!” that goes out exclusively to our prayer partners, our MemberPartners and those on our prayer list. It’s usually a collaboration of sorts between Marti and me. However, last Friday’s entry did not go out, much to Marti’s consternation, because I just wasn’t getting it. It’s thrown us into a weekend of discussion. So it was decided, since it’s now Monday, that I would turn it into a Catch, and let everybody in on the discussion, which is a polite way of saying we’re still having it. Continue reading

Power, Strength and ella-minnow-pee

For I am not ashamed of the gospel: it is the power of God for salvation to every one who has faith. (Romans 1:16 RSV)

But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God. (John 1:12 RSV)

The blood that gives me strength from day to day,
It will never lose its power.  – Andrae Crouch

It just seemed right to finish out the week with Andrae. I want to take you through a process of discovery that occurred to me this morning as I remembered one of his songs. Continue reading

‘It won’t be long’

th-12Count the years as months
Count the months as weeks
Count the weeks as days —
Any day now —
We’ll be going home

God put out a call for new music to be born in the 1960s — music that was culturally relevant to what a generation of baby boomers were hearing and singing, and that carried news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I first heard the call to write this music in 1963, but didn’t do anything about it until four years later. By the time I had written, recorded and gotten out with my music, I found others who had heard a similar call like Larry Norman, Paul Clark, Randy Matthews, and Nancy Honeytree. But these were not the first. By the time I first ran into Andrae Crouch and the Disciples, they had already become seasoned road warriors.

In other words, before there was Jesus Music, there was Andrae Crouch. Continue reading

Not “even,” but “only”

th-11His strength; our weakness. Will we ever get it straight?

I am getting to where I pretty firmly believe that God does not reach anyone through our strengths, only through our weaknesses. Our strengths only bring us glory. His strength in our weakness makes him the star. Continue reading
