She’s been called the First Lady of the Jesus Movement, and the fact that she came out of Fort Wayne, Indiana proves that in 1970, Jesus wasn’t only moving in southern California, He was moving all over. This was a global phenomenon.
And what the Lord told Nancy Honeytree to write on her tablet, so that runners could carry it, was a song about deliverance — deliverance from heavy emotional burdens that weigh us down and the sins that hold us in captivity. And like Love Song’s “Welcome Back” and Noel Paul Stookey’s “Hymn,” it was a gentle call to consider that God just might want to have a relationship with us so much so that He has removed the barrier that was between us — our sin. He has washed us clean.

This is a very mature song for a young Jesus Freak to be writing and singing. The idea of being without blemish before the Lord is not something a new Christian usually grasps. And the idea of God being in our midst before and after becoming a Christian is something many older Christians don’t get. In Acts 17, Paul states when speaking to the stoic and Epicurean philosophers of his day, “[God’s] purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward Him and find Him—though he is not far from any one of us. For in Him we live and move and exist” (Acts 17:27-28). These concepts are not common themes in Christian music, proof that the Holy Spirit was definitely influencing this early Jesus Music.

Brother. Nancy’s music speak to my heart as does Randy Stonehill. I’m very bled reading your accounts of the Jesus Revival during the early 70s before we were converted and filled with the Holy Spirit on June 05, 1977.
Thanks for this great message about the Jesus Movement so long ago. I feel I learn more each day about God’s saving grace thru his son Jesus Christ and such great music long ago about this and in 1977 I was saved but, many tough years ahead of backsliding and glad I found my way back.
What resonates with me are the words, “Why did I wait so long?” I wish I had taken advantage of the cleansing salvation of Jesus Christ early in life. Becoming Christ like much sooner, rather than thinking salvation was enough until I realized God wanted all of my heart not just a small piece of it. Now I am at a point surprised that he keeps finding stuff to clean out of my heart. It seems like the job is never finished. Surrendering to him time and again is what He is waiting for ….Wow!! What patience!
What struck me in all of this is that God is waiting for us all to repent. He keeps trying with revival after revival and his patience is mind boggling. Ironically, we have the audacity to think that we are waiting for God. I wonder what brought that on? I thought I was waiting for God until i realized he planned my life in eternity, and he made me for his pleasure to together work out that plan. Going my own way is filled with hardship and frustration and a few other adjectives. God’s pleasure is a delight to work under. Glad God let me figure that out before I die. It is actually a joy to let God help me renew the way I think!!!!
