‘Don’t use my name’

In a recent interview with Noel Paul Stookey, he spoke of two divine interventions that shaped his life and career. The first introduced him to Jesus, the second provided direction for his songwriting and already well-earned public persona as a member of the iconic ‘60s folk group, Peter Paul & Mary. The second came by way of a couple who met him after a concert and said they had a word from the Lord for him. That’s pretty direct from the mouth of God, but the message was an unexpected one. The message was simply, “Don’t use my name.”

Now, usually when we hear the phrase “a word from the Lord” we are set up for some heavyweight spiritual content that leaves no doubt as to its meaning. This was surely different. This was a call to be subtle, to not be obviously “Christian…” to, as Emily Dickinson wrote, “tell it slant.” Noel was a new Christian in the public eye, and this was a word for him from God Himself not to be so obvious about his new faith. When you think about it, this was exactly what Jesus did. He didn’t come right out and announce to people that He was the Messiah. He spoke in parables.

Now had I heard Noel’s story years ago when I was “so much older,” I would have been confused and doubtful about the divine origins of this message, but now that I am “younger” than I was, I see the wisdom in it. If you think about it, God has always hidden or at least disguised His truth so as not to give what is sacred to dogs, or cast pearls before pigs (Matthew 7:6).

There are at least two reasons for this. 1) God wants a relationship with those who want a relationship with Him. You don’t waste the truth on those who are not even looking for it. Thus the passage about the dogs and the pigs. But right after this, was when Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (7:7). Clearly, He will meet us at the point of our need and desire for Him.

2) We simply can’t take all the truth all at once. It would overwhelm our tiny little minds. Or as Emily Dickinson has stated, in a little poem well worth digging into for its huge implications:

Tell all the truth but tell it slant —
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth’s superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind.

So, God told Noel not to use His name, but to find other ways to tell the truth about Jesus and His gospel, and when this is done well, as it has been in Noel’s case, it can come home with even greater impact than with the more literal rendering.

The Jesus Movement was literal. Truth made it into song lyrics, placards on the street, and onto bumper stickers all over town. “Jesus” was on the cover of Time. Arthur Blessitt is still carrying the cross, preaching its gospel all over the world. It was a time to tell everybody to get right with Jesus. It was a straight-on message. There’s always a time for that.

But there is also a time for more subtle messages, especially today, with a public sabotage of the gospel going on and many false teachers. Noel is writing songs that tuck the truth away, the same way the parables of Jesus do, making the search worth it, and the reward for seeking, bright indeed. We need to be good at both of these approaches, and when to use them, as we see the time drawing near.

John- I remember hearing you in concert back in the late seventies or early eighties. I remember you ending the concert with a “secular” song, after explaining that it was a parable, and as with all parables, some would get it and some would not. I remember “getting it” and understanding the message of the song, but 40 some years later, I can’t remember what song it was 🙂 Any idea?

Thanks for a great message. I cannot imagine one day without the great messages from the Catch. Jesus has always been the truth and thank God we have him to follow always especially now more than ever before. Their have been many times I wanted to pack it in and when I feel that way pray even more and read the word. Doesn’t matter about what this denomination says or what is preached. My Mom has lost her short term memory as I was told from my daughter when she went to get her Monday at the Bee Hive Senior Home. My Mom stays there when my daughter is out of town with her family. My daughter cannot even leave her alone for a spell to do the marketing or take the children to school. Mom gets confused and is frightened. Mom likes the Bee Hive and will be moved there. My daughter can see her often there and we will go early next month for a visit when Mom is settled in. My daughter makes sure she gets what is needed. My mom’s long term memory is good and she knows her sister when she talks to her or sees me or remembers events long ago. Without the Grace of God thru his Son Jesus following him I would have been a total mess along time ago. You all take care, God Bless, and thanks for your great messages of our Lord and Savior.

Part of the problem is that people have so many preconceived misconceptions about Christians, Christianity, being “born again”, the definition of “sin”, the “Judeo-Christian beliefs” involved in the founding of the United States, the triune nature of God, and on and on it goes and especially about Jesus. How do we get past all of the preconceived misconceptions if we talk or write songs about these topics expecting that people understand exactly what we’re talking about? Maybe by writing parables?
