The belt of truth

OIP-14

Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth… Ephesians 6:14

When you got up this morning and walked into your place in the world — maybe, like me, it was just a room in your house — you immediately took up a position “against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12). If I had asked you, you might know about this but chances are, you weren’t aware of it just now.

Me? I got into our comfortable queen Anne chair next to a side table with a lamp in front of a window filled with a wall of green ficus tree boughs. Sounds idyllic, doesn’t it? And cozy. It is, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. It doesn’t even hint about the evil forces I am currently facing — the “mighty powers in this dark world” that lurk all around me. Or that I am right now subject to — “all strategies of the devil” even in my own home.

That’s why we need to put on all the armor of God — “every piece” Paul says — and keep it on at all times, because each piece is designed to protect a certain part of our spiritual life that is vulnerable. And he starts with the belt of truth — a fitting beginning, because truth is being attacked on every side right now.

The belt is important because it holds everything together. The truth Paul is referring to is not the word of God (because later, he refers to the sword as the word of God). The truth here would be the way things really are — how we see the world based on what we know about Jesus and the word of God, not to be confused with our opinions, as in “his belief in the value of hard work,” and not necessarily truth, fact, or gospel.

What is right and wrong; what is good and evil; and how do we know the difference? The belt of truth helps us determine this and helps us guard against falsehood.

Wearing the belt of truth also means telling the truth. Lies seem to be a part of everyone’s strategy these days — as in “everyone does it” — so a truth-teller will stand out and give opportunity for the gospel.

Truth is healing. It is strengthening. It is secure. It is solid. It binds us together. We always win with truth, even when it hurts. Ultimately, truth is Jesus Christ Himself. (“I am the way, the truth and the life” John 14:6.) Strap on the belt of truth and measure everything by Jesus.

Such a great and true message. I remember as a child when Mom would ask if I was telling the truth by saying Are you telling me a story. Didn’t really understand too much back then but it made one think about what we all say at times. We need the truth always in our faith, words, and beliefs to stand up against the biggest liar of them all Satan. Good news all the pipes have been replaced in our bathroom and that is the truth so Goettl should not have to go back in like the last time when the pipes went bad behind the toilet and now flooring can be done. Good to use the bathroom again for the basics and not have to go to the base gym for showering and out house for the other. We still have it until June 17 so for now we have an extra in case needed. Always keep the armor of God on because Satan likes to cause trouble even when technicians trying to fix something in your home. Take care, God Bless everyone today.
