I will climb up to my watchtower
and stand at my guardpost.
There I will wait to see what the Lord says
and how He will answer my complaint. Habakkuk 1:1
The watchtower is the place for the prophet. As a prophet, Habakkuk is one who climbs to a high vantage point to see the danger in the distance before anyone at ground level is aware of it. He is the voice of God and the conscience of society, and a champion and guardian of the covenants. Habakkuk is a social critic mandated by God to speak truth to power and challenge corrupt leaders and influencers.
But this time, Habakkuk is simply trying to hear from God.
When he finally hears, God says, “Write my answer plainly on tablets, so that a runner can carry the correct message to others” (Hab. 2:1). And what is that answer? We don’t know for sure. That’s why this book is so relevant today. We’re still waiting. We do know that the answer is for a future time. It describes the end and how it will be fulfilled. But as we near the end, I believe part of the answer comes new to every generation. That’s why we have prophets still today. They hear the answer for the next generation and write it down so that it can be carried abroad. That’s what we intend to do here.
So what is Habakkuk going to write down on those tablets? Actually, the real question is what are we going to write down? This book is not finished.
“No reason to get excited,” the thief, he kindly spoke
“There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke
But you and I, we’ve been through that, and this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late” – Bob Dylan (the prophet)

I am glad to hear about the story of Habakkuk and the Watch Tower. I think millions of us remember a popular song years ago with that title. I am glad Habakkuk was trying to hear from God. So many great stories in the Bible in both Old and New Testament and this one is really something. I believe no one ever stops learning from the word of God and I hope each day millions always anxious to learn more from the word and always remember Jesus who came to save all of us.
Pastor John, Love how you ended the Catch w/ Bob Dylan!
