Grace Over Judgment

by John & Marti Fischer

Grace is the most outrageous act of God in human history. When God sent His only Son to redeem humanity, He overturned the cycle of cause and effect — sowing and reaping — as we know it. He broke His own rules. No longer was it, “Do right and be blessed; do wrong and be cursed.” Suddenly, it became, “Believe in the One I sent, and you will be forgiven.”

“There is no judgment against anyone who believes in Him” (John 3:18). No judgment. That’s impossible. Read it again… slowly… and let it settle into your heart: “no judgment against anyone who believes in Him.” That is unprecedented. It runs counter to everything we’ve been taught — the law of retaliation, the fairness of equal exchange, even the laws of physics. Grace disrupts all of it. It’s not fair. It’s not logical. And that’s the point.

My own failures have brought me low. They’ve stripped away any illusions about my own goodness. It is there I meet face-to-face with those I have judged. My losses enable me to touch their hearts, empathize with their failure, and — you guessed it — quickly accept and love them as no other can.

So why do we, as believers, still judge others? Could it be because we haven’t let go of our own regrets? If I still hold my past against myself, I will inevitably hold the past against others. Unforgiven failure isolates the heart. It keeps us replaying our disasters, shrinking back from love, and living with the quiet ache of isolation.

But if we accept our failures as God does — if we see them for what they are — proof of our need for Him — everything changes. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. Grace then turns us outward with more compassion, sensitivity, wisdom, and understanding.

Our mistakes are not wasted. In the hands of God, they are redeemed, repurposed, and transformed into channels of grace. And once you’ve received that grace for yourself, you cannot help but extend it through the power of the Holy Spirit within us, to others.
