It’s still life
But not as still as it once seemed
It’s still life
And I never would have dreamed
That the answer would have so many questions
He’s the same
And it’s still life
There are no answers to life; there is only one answer.
I figured we needed another day on this — at least I do — to try and explain it.
There were some excellent questions that came up in comments from yesterday’s Catch. One I think we will all identify with was from Tim and his daughter who are in a difficult situation right now, and apparently his daughter threw her Bible and devotional book at the wall the other day, and cried out: “Why doesn’t God step in and help after I’ve asked Him to?” I bet there is some area in which we all feel this right now, and I think I may be able to shed some light on this.
I believe the answer is that God has already stepped in. In fact He’s been in all along. He stepped in when He became human, and He’s been “in” ever since.
One line in the song you might recall was, “In one hand I’ve collected all the answers; and with the other I’m just trying to survive.” That’s a lot of answers to have to try and hold onto. Well maybe … unless there is only one answer. If there’s only one answer, I could hold onto that. Well, there is. Stick with me now …
I found something out when I first wrote this song. I originally had: “It’s still life, and I never would have dreamed that the answers would have so many questions,” but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the answer is not plural. It is singular. It is Jesus. There are not multiple answers to my problems, there is one answer and living is the process of finding out how and why that is.
We live the questions; we hold onto to Jesus; and in the process we are finding out how and why He is the answer.
It’s not that He’s answered the question or intends to answer the question; it’s that He is the answer to all questions. Jesus doesn’t necessarily answer our questions; He shows us Himself. This is, indeed, what life is about: Finding out — and by that, proving — that Jesus is the answer to everything.
Is that just too simple? No. Not when you have to live it. We’re not talking about knowing the answer or saying the answer (this isn’t Sunday School); we’re talking about living the answer (this is life). That’s where it gets complicated, but that’s exactly what we are here to do.
In Ephesians 1:9-10 Paul states this very thing. “He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth.”
The mystery of God’s will is “the summing up of all things in Christ.” We are, therefore, a part of the mystery of how His will is being worked out on earth, and though we don’t see it all right now, we will soon. We are living the process of His will.
There’s an old gospel song that goes, “And we’ll understand it better by and by.” That’s not pie in the sky; that’s the will of God, and you and I are living it. We’re finding it out every day. We are holding onto the answer in one hand, and trying to survive with the other, and that’s as good as it gets — but I would propose that that’s pretty darn good. How can you get any better than having Jesus to hold onto?
There are not a hundred different answers to a hundred questions. We don’t have to be that smart. There is only one answer. Our experience in living is to find out why.
Thank you!!! Thank you!!!
Jesus is the answer. In our heads we know He is the answer. But sometimes the pain in our hearts – or even in our bodies – cries louder than our faith, and we feel a strong need for a more “earthly” answer to that pain. Here. And. Now!
But I do recall during the long and painful birth of my son (drugs? Not me! I can labor for days and push for 3 hours without ’em!), when they finally told me he was just too big to come out and I’d have another caesarian, I then totally changed to weak, whining and whimpering. All I could do was just cry for Jesus. Then, suddenly, I was comforted that I knew He was there, watching us; in and around us, and loving us. He was, indeed, the answer. Then somehow I knew it would all be okay.
Amen to this Pastor John: “How can you get any better than having Jesus to hold onto?” and Amen again… 🙂
Jesus is the answer to everything!! The two most important days in ones life are; the day you were born, and the day you find out why. Like your closing statement says, “Our experience in living is to find out why.” We are on a mission, and that mission is “living the process of his will.”
I just recently have figured this out, and your message today has confirmed everything that I have been seeking. Thank you so much for all you do!!
Your post makes me think of Andrae Crouch’s song – Jesus is the Answer
Jesus Is The Answer For The World Today
Above Him There’s No Other Jesus Is The Way
If You Have Some Questions In The Corners Of Your Mind
And Traces Of Discourgement And Peace You Cannot Find
Reflections Of The Old Past, They Seem To Face You Everyday
There’s One Thing I Know For Sure That Jesus Is the way
Let Me Hear You Now
Jesus Is The Answer For The World Today
Above Him There’s No Other Jesus Is The Way
I Know You Got Mountains That You Think You Cannot Climb
I Know That Your Skies Have Been Dark, You Think The Sun Won’t Shine
In Case You Don’t Know
I’m Hear To Tell You That The Word Of God Is True
And Everything That He Promised
I Tell You He Would Do It For You
Let Me Tell You That
Jesus Is The Answer For The World Today
Above Him There’s No Other Jesus Is The Way
Hey Sandy – thank you!! I listened to this on youtube and just sat and cried. I wish they’d invite Andrea Crouch to Baltimore for a good old revival. They need our prayers so much. And thank you, John. I’ve been holding on tight with two hands. I love Him, and I am so thankful for good brothers and sisters like you all out there.
