All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. (Acts 2:42)
What we’re finding out so far:
Throughout Scripture, the table is where God makes room for people who didn’t expect to belong. And when people try to control that table—He overturns it and sets it again.
And what did the early followers of Christ do around that table? They devoted themselves to:
1) the apostles’ teaching,
2) fellowship,
3) sharing meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and
4) prayer.
Four things that constitute a church. And what would be required in order to carry out these four things? Not much.
A place to gather.
Food and drink.
Something to gather around.
(How about a table… or a zoom call?)
I’d say brick and mortar church has a gotten a little complicated today. But the complications haven’t helped any of these four important things along; in fact two, and in some cases three of these things have been dropped. Depending on the sermon, the apostles’ teaching may be there. But fellowship, a meal, and but for once every month or two, the Lord’s Supper, have all disappeared. Sorry, but a two-minute greet-the-people-around-you time does not constitute fellowship (and doesn’t that seem like the longest two minutes in your life if you’ve ever done that?). And any table in today’s church setting is not something to sit around; it’s something to hold a Bible or maybe flowers up front, and bulletins and church news in the back.

Why This Matters Now
There are many who are sowing confusion.
As Paul warned, “the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine… but will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear” (2 Timothy 4:3).
Lots of scratching going on.
