John Fischer The Catch

This is a picture of Lisa Brennan-Jobs. She is the daughter of Apple founder, Steve Jobs and his high school sweetheart, Chrisann Brennan. Steve and Chrisann had an on-again off-again relationship throughout the seventies but they were never married. Lisa was a product of that relationship, born on my birthday in 1978. She has a book coming out next month titled Small Fry. The book is a memoir of her endeavor to find herself while being raised by a struggling single mom amidst the huge success of her father, who viewed her as an unfortunate blot on his otherwise ascending persona. I came upon this story through an article in Vanity Fair magazine, “Growing Up Jobs” which is made up of excerpts from the book.

Today’s Catch is coming to you from my favorite local Johnny’s Cafe. This one happens to be called RJ’s Cafe. It’s a 15-minute drive from my house, but it’s worth it — the deciding factor being the pancakes. I am always in search of the best pancakes in town and RJ’s is the closest thing to it in my area. I’m sure it’s a personal thing, but I like pancakes thin and moist. A thick, dry and “cakey” pancake is just not my cup of tea, but that seems to be more often than not what I find.

Instead of trying to make society more Christian, we need to focus on making ourselves more vitally Christian in society. This is what Jesus would want.

Christians have spent an inordinate amount of time, money and effort in the last 30 years trying to make society more Christian. And to do so, we have bought heavily into politics as the way to go about changing the world. Bad move. Rather than making the world more Christian, it has ended up going the other way. The world’s influence on us has turned out to be much greater than our influence upon the world.

Currently I am in the middle of what appears like it’s going to be a long wait at the Apple store. If you‘ve ever been in one of these, you know it’s a crowded, bustling place about the size of half a gymnasium. There are three rows of long tables that stretch from one end of the store to the other. The tables close to the front of the store contain new products; the tables in the back are for people like me who are waiting for a technician or currently getting help from one. At the very back of the store is a long table that runs perpendicular to the others. This is what is called the “Genius Bar.” Behind that table sit the Apple geniuses, who are ready to share their expertise with you, if you have an appointment.
